One thing worth thinking about is that when this research talks about &quot;rewriting memories&quot;, the idea is not to change the actual content of the memory but only the emotional response to it. That&#039;s one advantage that comes from experiments on humans as opposed to animals. You can&#039;t ask rats if they remember, you can just measure their emotional behavior. In humans, they can explicitly say they remember what they&#039;ve learned but they still do not show a fear response.
