One thing worth thinking about is that when this research talks about "rewriting memories", the idea is not to change the actual content of the memory but only the emotional response to it. That's one advantage that comes from experiments on humans as opposed to animals. You can't ask rats if they remember, you can just measure their emotional behavior.
